The American Windsurfing Tour for 2011

Windsurfing is why I moved to Maui from Northern California. Before 1999, I’d sail Sherman Island, Rio Vista, Chrissy Fields, 3rd Ave, Coyote Point, Waddell Creek and Hood River. Windsurfing is still is one of my many passions.

Sam Bittner!

Maui offers consistent trades, warm water, waves and much more. There are many greats that have retired here and new talent charging, like Sam Bittner and Kai Lenny. And then there’s Robby Naish,  Matt and Kevin Pritchard, Phil McGain, Mark Johnstone and many others are still throwing forwards, setting the clew on the deck and keeping the sport alive and thriving. Here’s the latest events to mark your calendar, world-wide. Check out the line up on http://americanwindsurfingtour.com/

Introducing Trade Wind Event’s break out 2011 American Windsurfing Tour

The same people who presented the hugely successful 2010 Pistol River Wave Bash, will be a driving force behind the first annual American Windsurfing Tour.

• The premier event of the 2011 season is to be held at the famed beach at Waddell Creek, just south of San Francisco. It’s been scheduled for the first weekend in May to take advantage of the prime spring sailing season in Central Cal.

• The infamous Pistol River Wave Bash becomes the second stop, held once again over the third weekend of June during that magical time in Southern Oregon when the spring swells are still hitting and the more consistent summer winds are kicking in.

• Next it’s off to Punta San Carlos, on Mexico’s Baja peninsula, for some world-class down the line wave sailing. To be held over the last weekend of July into the first week of August, in the hopes of coinciding with a tasty south swell from the other hemisphere.

Maui’s own, Sam Bittner is going big for her sport. Support her and windsurfing!  Go to: http://americanwindsurfingtour.com/ to follow the tour!

Rig big and hang on for some great sailing action this summer.

Event Director Sam Bittner

Thanks Sam

UP Your SUP Permformance Suzie Cooney for Naish on Combining Upper Body Paddle Endurance with Balance and Core Training

UP your SUP Performance by Combining Upper Body Paddle Endurance with Balance and Core Training for Naish International

by Suzie Cooney, CPT of Suzie Trains Maui and Naish Team SUP Rider

Whether you’re new to the sport of stand up paddling or preparing for an exciting Maui Maliko downwinder, having upper body paddling endurance and excellent balance will get you through the deepest troughs, maybe help you pass a competitor or help you enter bigger waves and swells with extra confidence and success!I like to be as efficient as possible when training, so combining the two is perfect. The following exercise is just a sample of what you can do to get stronger, develop faster reflexes, increase the rapid firing of your finite muscles that stabilizes your larger muscles, improve your timed runs and possibly reduce fatigue and/or risk of overuse injuries. It’s well known that SUP requires the entire body to perform and respond in unison. You’re never isolating one muscle group at any given moment. As you paddle, your entire shoulder complex, upper/lower back, feet, ankles, knees, hips and core (everything excluding your extremities) are executing each short or long stroke in a smooth, connected motion. Conditions can and do change, so adding some balance work is also a huge plus. I totally can tell that when I balance train, my reactions are sharp and quick.Based on your current level of fitness, ease into some of these more advanced moves and change the variables accordingly. You can simply start with your own paddle or select one of the suggested weights. I usually start light and advance to heavy, to fatigue.

The Exercise: Balance/Weighted Paddle Stroke Repeats:

Equipment: A weight: 4-10 lb medicine ball, 9-12 lb body bar or regular dumbbell
A balance platform: a small 12” inflatable disc or BOSU, INDO Board 24” Gigante inflatable disc, INDO Board or your own SUP
Caution: if using an SUP board on a Gigante, you may want to remove the fins.

Full Moon SUP Paddle on Maui Unreal Experience September 2010

FULL MOON SUP PADDLE MAUI, SEPTEMBER 22, 2010

For the brave and adventurous, Maui was the place to be, last night, September 22, 2010.  You could see the bottom of the ocean at 8:30 at night. Adorned with glow sticks and glow bracelets, some boards and paddles even decorated and one prone paddler, Shawn, slipped into the warm waters of Maui to stand up paddle  under the full moon!

With Noah, Randy Royse,Eddie Ogata, Nitsan, Mark ,Shawn and I leading the pack, looking back behind us and the glow of green lights with the lights of Makawao, Pukalani and Kihei on the hillside as the moon rose behind us.  A light breeze on our chests heading out, it was an awesome experience. The tiki torches lit the beach and guided us back as we rounded a catamaran as our marker in the distance. Becky and Steve saw shooting stars, Dagmar and Annette were in awe and kept a brisk pace. Milt was our safety sweeper and made sure everyone was safe and on course. Sarah from Naish had her own eager crew and was mindful to keep the pack together too!  Thanks Sarah for all the boards and help and enthusiam.

Joel, Marissa, Sandy, Janet, Lyn, Omi, Richard, Jade, Alfred, Joe, Scott, and so many others enjoyed this adventure and created quite the photo opportunity for Kevin and Bonny. Kevin Frest, a professional photographer who happened to specialize in night photography, saw the torches and the strange glow coming from the beach and grabbed his camera! Tripod set and he started snapping away. Notice the stars in the photo above.

The late summer swell started to show itself and many grabbed a few rides back to the beach. The water was so warm it was hard to get out. I headed to the beach and Laura Dunn, neighbor and friend had brownies ( so healthy ), to share. I grabbed one, then headed back out until about 10:15.  There were small bumps and it was so addictive to be out under the moon.

I think I can speak for all of us, that it was truly an awesome time. After we returned to the beach, loaded the boards, it was time for a little guitar and chill’n under the palm trees and with the tikis still lit, a few songs to pass around and share.

Please join us for the next full moon adventure and last before the whales arrive, Friday, October 22, 2010! See Events, at Suzie Trains Maui, or click here for more information.

A big thanks to Coach, Sarah and Nitsan from the Maui Naish Pro Center! Milt for being our guardian, Dagmar and Lauren for feeding us treats, Richard and Sarah for your kind donations, and all that came to share and glide!

Stand up paddling will change your life. Getting fit, making new friends, enjoying a healthy lifestyle couldn’t be more fun!

Aloha and until next time,

Suzie Cooney, CPT

Women’s FREE Stand Up Paddling Clinic on Maui with Suzie Cooney and Dolphins Too!

August 28, 2010  Maui, Hawaii

Anyone who has had the luxury of visiting or living on Maui, can only describe the beauty of the ocean. Having the opportunity to experience it, play in it,  and making it a part of one’s healthy lifestyle, one can only be so fortunate.

Once again, I had the pleasure of meeting some fine women of Maui who joined me in this experience. These women charged on the water and did it with confidence, grace and power.

A Healthy Day of Fun on Maui

A Healthy Day of Fun on Maui

Stand up paddling   ( SUP ) offers all of that. Today we also had a surprise, a small pod of curious dolphins!  Rarely do I see them so close in and it really made for a memorable experience!

Meet Jenn, Peggy, Stacey, Monica, Janet and Amanda.  What a cool group of gals. Of course we laughed, splashed and tried a few moves on the board that caused a few grunts  ( Stacey….. :)     ).  What I also thought was great, is that we traded boards now and then to feel the different types of board that offered new challenges. Some boards were less stable, some more.   Their paddling strokes by the end of the hour were very impressive.  I had a stubborn droplet of water on my camera, so sorry for the blurry photos!

Peggy

Peggy

Thank you, thank you, thank you Suzie! Saturday was an amazing day for me. I was definitely apprehensive about my capabilities. I have terrible balance, but I really wanted to learn a sport that would let me enjoy the ocean. Your instruction and encouragement gave me the confidence to try and I had so much fun (even if I did spend more time in the water than everyone else)! I now feel confident in learning the basics and I know that I can easily get back up when I fall. Enjoying the peaceful morning with a great group of women and seeing dolphins made the experience that much more special. I can’t wait until I can go out again! Thank you again, you really are an inspiration! And also thank you for the goody bag and to your wonderful sponsors, Naish, OluKai, and the American Heart Association, who so generously donated to our goody bag.

P.S. I didn’t want to return my rented board without getting a bit more practice. I met my husband and we went to Wailea Beach. I showed him what I had learned and then he too gave it a try. He’s not much of a water person but he shared my enthusiasm and so next time we’ll rent two boards and practice together. My goal is to purchase boards and make this a regular part of our life. And hopefully, inspire my daughters too! Thank you.  Peggy, Kula

Maui FREE Womens SUP Clinic Aug 2010

Thanks to Suzie I can now call myself a Stand-up Paddler!  I had tried many times, to stand up on a board, and always failed.  It was so frustrating.  I could never get my balance.  Taking Suzie’s clinic taught me all the little “secrets” and tid-bits that you would not know on your own or a friend won’t tell you.  I was up standing and paddling immediately and kept it going the whole time!  Although I’m sure my form was not it’s best, I felt like a pro.  I have since gone by myself with no problems at all.  I am now purchasing a board and will make it a point to get out there as often as I can.  Great exercise, great scenery and great fun!  Thank you Suzie!  You are a dream!!  Stacey, Kihei

Maui SUP Clinic Aug 2010 Suzie CooneyHi Suzie!

Wow! Thank you so much for the AMAZING and INSPIRING free women’s SUP clinic you held today. With absolutely perfect weather and your constantly cheerful and encouraging attitude it could not have been any better.  We were greeted by lake like conditions and Suzie’s contagious zest for life.

Starting it off with helpful safety tips and a little basic SUP 101 we were off! It’s amazing how much more confidant I was entering the water today after getting some tips from a real pro.Once we were out and up, Suzie paid careful attention to each and every one of us individually as well as collectively; and continued to coach and encourage us all.

The Naish 14 Foot Glide is THE ride for Maui North Shore Down Winders

It’s no wonder people love the Naish 14 foot Glide. It’s width of 27 1/4″ and thickest point of 5 3/4″ and the nice hard rails and squared off tail, allows one to glide and connect swell after swell, especially on a good day with 30 mph winds at your back! Or even if your just cruising the lakes for a tour, the board is steady and has the nicest sweet spot. Dropping into Camp One, the swells actually had some size. I loved how the board handled a decent size drop and held good top speed without hesitation or drag.

Here’s a couple shots Maui photographer, Simone Reddingius snapped as we passed Hookipa, on Maui’s N. shore. The conditions were perfect, with a NE direction of winds averaging 20-25, and occasional gusts to 30!

New Picture (5)New Picture (3)

The new bamboo composite carbon paddle was incredibly comfortable and the blade width, perfect. The smaller diameter, matte carbon finished shaft and friendly handle is a good combo. It was stable, allowed for a quick paddle entry and exit.

Today was another amazing coast run from Maliko to Lowers at Kanaha.
