Core Stability Exercises for Surfers

CORE STABILITY EXERCISES FOR SURFERS USING A FOAM ROLLER:

These photos of me were taken by Simone Reddingius from page 53 ( all rights reserved )from the book Surf Survival The Surfer’s Health Handbook.  Here we’re showing you how you can improve core stability for surfing by using the self myofascial roller or also referred to as an SMR roller.  It’s like a self massage when used as a way to roll out tired and sore muscles.  For more exercises to help you gotta see these: See my video

The self myofascial roller is a dense piece of foam, 36 inches in length by 6 inches across in diameter and is often seen in most gyms.  They do come in different densities so be sure to start with the easiest or less intense one. That is usually the ones that are white.  In this illustration we are using the more dense, stiff roller. Continue reading Core Stability Exercises for Surfers

Indo Board Balance Trainer’s Founder Hunter Joslin and Suzie Cooney Advanced Core Training Exercises on Gigante Flo Cushions

By Suzie Cooney, CPT owner of Suzie Trains Maui, LLC

It’s no doubt that Hunter Joslin, Indo Board Balance Trainer’s Founder and developer of the popular Gigante Flo Cushion, entertains and trains with me at this year’s Battle of the Paddle at Dana Point. Hunter was wowing the crowd with some tricks this weekend as Chip Martoccia, VP of Operations and I cheered on.

I’ve been a team rider and ambassador for Indo Board Balance Trainer for some time, and thoroughly enjoy my time with Hunter and crew. We never miss an opportunity to play around and challenge one another. He’s quite the surfer and in very good shape. We’ve shared a few waves together on Maui, and I can say he is just a little competitive!

Hunter asked if I’d do this photo shoot and share some new tricks I’ve been working on in my studio here at SUZIE TRAINS MAUI. Of course! Turns out he had never tried or seen any of these so I was stoked, but under the gun to give him my best.

These exercises are THE ultimate core challenge and require good form, good posture and good overall anatomical health. Remember the core is where all movement begins and is everything excluding your extremities.

This type of training, I also refer to as proprioception training to encourage cat-like reflexes for your lifestyle, prevent injury and to provide the opportunity for your brain to command each finite muscle, tendon and ligament that supports all joints.

Balance and Strength Training Pays Off for Maui Windsurfer

Aloha Windsurf Enthusiasts,

I’m so grateful of the kindness and feedback that every so often comes my way, as it is the greatest reward. My clients inspire me everyday with their dedication to their water sports and health. As a trainer who specializes in water sports performance and windsurfer myself, it’s pretty awesome to get emails like the one below written by my client, Mike Abrams of Pukalani, Maui.  Mahalo Mike!

“To all those water sports men and women it may concern,

After my sailing sessions yesterday and today, I simply felt compelled to write this endorsement about Suzie’s training methods, that I have been blessed with for almost 5 years. I am the luckiest windsurfer on the planet to have found Suzie as my personal trainer. Every day, I find that I am performing moves and controlling my board and sail better than ever before. I am a very humble person, with I hope a low ego and no expectations of how I am going to sail with each session.

However, I can honestly let my fellow sailors know that I have improved, and sail with much more confidence and balance skills than ever before, no matter what the conditions seem to be. Like today, I sailed an hour and a half and never missed one jibe and yesterday sailed in overpowering conditions, and performed jibes on the outside (while most folks fell into the over choppy and gusty blown water) with total control.

I directly attribute these increased balance skills to Suzie’s training which includes not only balance training, but core strength training too, along with regular weight lifting. I can actually feel my legs lifting up from a squatted position (because of having to keep the board on the water in over powered conditions around the turns) towards windward to help keep my balance. Also, I can now jibe in light winds with much greater confidence because of Continue reading Balance and Strength Training Pays Off for Maui Windsurfer

PocketFuel is My Rocket Fuel for Optimum Sports Performance

by Suzie Cooney, CPT

I’d like to introduce to you what I use for a turbo session on the water and for the long endurance paddling runs down Maliko Gulch. I squeeze my PocketFuel into my mouth and get ready to feel the energy I need to perform and play.

Smart athletes and weekend warriors plan, prepare and properly fuel. The worst thing you can do is head out for a session and not have healthy, sustaining energy that you need to be at your best. Besides crashing on a wave having your energy crash is just as bad. I’m totally guilty for getting to the beach, all pumped up and heading out with only maybe a banana and cup of coffee. For me that is a disaster and the sign of a short, lame session and poor performance.

Twist, squish squeeze and enjoy! There are 5 crazy, delicious flavors and my favorite is called Chocolate Haze. Other flavors include Crunchy Banana Blueberry, Chunky Coconut Cherry, Chocolate Espresso and Chia Goji & Honey.  All are organic, gluten-free, vegan and packed with whole food ingredients; primarily almond.

The appropriate combinations of protein, carbs, healthy fats, potassium, magnesium, chloride, sodium nicely balance your electrolyte needs while you perform.  Remember, proper training requires you to plan ahead and plan after your session. Restoring your energy resources in your body will help you recover faster, repair the muscles you just broke down and allow you to charge again the next day.

Everything you need is just a squirt away. Sometimes a whole 3 0z. packet will last me a full 10 mile Maliko downwinder. I purposely have in my truck a packet and eat half along with good hydration about 3o minutes before I head down. What’s totally cool, is that since the package itself can easily fit into my hydration pack, if I need to sit and ingest more, it’s so easy and not messy and can stay dry even in big swells!  They also come in convenient 1.8 ounce sizes too, perfect to put in your surf shorts.

My body accepts all the ingredients very well and I can digest easily. Some other products that are designed to do the same thing cause my blood sugars to spike too high and then the worst thing happens, I crash and lose steam. Not cool.

To learn more about PocketFuel and where you can get the energy you need to power up your paddling, go to http://www.pocketfuelnaturals.com

A cool company, with smart folks who really get it. Let me know what you think? I’d love to learn what flavors you liked!

See you on the water,

Weight Loss Success Story: Dano Sayles of Maui Hawaii Lean Strong and Healthy

Weight Loss Success Story: Dano Sayles of Maui Hawaii Lean, Strong and Healthy

I’d like to introduce you to my client and friend, Dano Sayles of Maui, Hawaii. Dano, husband, and father, is a successful realtor and business entrepreneur who has recently accomplished a tremendous, goal.

Dano shed 40 pounds in two months. His body fat dropped from 33% to 26% and lost an impressive 7 inches from his waistline!  ( SEE PHOTOS BELOW ) He is 54 and is living proof that anyone can do it, you just need the support and tools.

We all know the challenge of losing weight and keeping it off can be frustrating and defeating. But when you have a plan and surround yourself with a team to support and guide you reaching your goals is awesome!

The world looks different. Your clothes fit different, you move differently with a profound inner and outer strength, and the world sees you differently.  People want what you have and that is pure and simple, health and vitality.

Dano transformed his life and has kindly allowed me to share his story on how he did it. There is no secret formula, no magic pill or wave of a wand. So, how did he do it? Well, he was first motivated by a contest called the 6 pack challenge.  People from all over the country would post their weight loss goals and history on FaceBook and by a certain date, there would be a winner with the most weight lost.  Dano is competitive.

He discovered the popular movie,  Fat Sick & Nearly Dead, a Joe Cross Film.  This film is real, raw and really incredible and shows the emotional connection to food, unhealthy habits and the debilitating physical results a poor diet.

Inspired by the movie and the amazing results the people in the film were having, Dano came to me fully ready to commit.   It was time to shed the weight for good and start a new, healthy and energized life. Little did he know just how much it would change his life in every way. We had some very big goals ahead of us.

I had been coaching and training with Dano in the past and often travel or the demands of his business would pull him off course.  We’d reach some decent goals and then we’d have to start over also sometimes due to injuries.

Like the movie illustrated, I mentioned to him that I had tried juicing myself and knew of well known chef on Maui named Craig King. He offered a service of preparing daily fresh juices as a way to cleanse and jump start many people who needed help in cleaning out the body and starting anew.  I also knew they would get along very well and have a supportive relationship, which is critical during this transition from food to no food.

INDO Board Gear for All of My Client’s Training Needs

Left to right: Gigante Disc, Suzie, smaller 12" disc, 6.5 in roller, 8.5 in roller, INDO Board Pro, Ying & Yang Rocker Board, Kicktail

Aloha! Everyone knows that trains with me or reads my blogs and articles that I ‘m a huge fan of the INDO Board. It has brought all my clients to new levels in fitness and is always exciting and fun; meanwhile allowing me to cater to each individual and their unique needs. I’ve been a team rider and contributor for INDO Board for some time, and their product development, trainer curriculum and application continues to blow me away. My surfers, stand up paddlers, kiters, windsurfers and those also coming off of injuries have enjoyed building their strength on the different INDO Boards and platforms. Even those reentering fitness again or for those who want to freshen up their routine, love the challenge and discover new things about their abilities which allows me at any level, help them reach their personal fitness goals.

Functional training is the key focus of my practice and it’s how I’m sure that when I’m training a surfer or a new mom, all of their kinetic checkpoints are tracking properly before we embark on any new fitness program. The INDO Board training equipment offers me the expansive opportunity to test, observe and ask folks to perform on different, unstable platforms and is part of every assessment for each individual. It allows me to really measure one’s core strength, balance and reaction ability while I’m developing their unique program in my mind, all the while watching them discover new abilities they thought they never had. As a trainer, this is my biggest reward!

Suzie Cooney on Gigante Disc photo by Darrell Wong 2011 All Rights Reserved

The Gigante Disc, which has been a dream come true not only for training my SUP clients on land before we train on the water, but I’ve discovered so many other modalities and exercises that I’ve never before knew one could do. I often make up a lot of this stuff as I go based on the individual’s ability. You will see this piece of gear as one of my favorites and now on Naish’s website with my fitness articles. My mind is always thinking in that direction as I develop more and more exercises and also combine other tools and weights in conjunction with. It’s literally exponential on what you can do for your own training.

My second favorite new deck is the simple INDO Board Kicktail and the INDO Board Ying & Yang Rocker Board, which is very loose and wide, offering my more advanced clients a lot more freestyle action on a larger surface, but I’ve already implemented other uses! For example, today, setting up my hard core windsurfer, Tim Ellison loves it when I place the INDO Board Kicktail board on top of a semi-inflated Gigante disc in the surfers stance. This is his way of practicing his foot work for wave sailing. Then I fire at him an 8lb medicine ball in all planes of motion. He loves it! The INDO Board Kicktail is narrow and challenging, while the Gigante forces him to keep his knees bent and manage the force production and movement caused by the weighted ball. He’s be happy and completey satisfied if we did this the entire session!

The photo above shows me on my Naish 9’0″ Hokua. This is quite a sassy quad fin and with the INDO Board Gigante disc inflated almost to the max, I’m able to push my body to the max. ( beginners, remove your fins and I may suggest you place two Gigantes with less air at first, one in front and one in the back of board ). Aquiring upper body endurance with a medicine ball or weighted bar, while at the same time challenging all the finite muscles from from my feet, ankles, knees, hips to the core. This will get your heart rate up and burn your legs! AWESOME!

If you want to see a few other INDO Board equipment exercises I’ve referenced, you can also check out my SUP Fitness Tips for Naish. Also, you can check out a recent article on advanced core training featuring my client Jules on the INDO Pro Board. She’s got a rock’n body and loves the

Advanced INDO Board Core Training. Not just for surfers or paddlers! Everyone can benefit!

core challenge.

SUP paddlers, you can take your paddling to the next level with just a few pieces of key INDO Board equipment. This kind of training REALLY transfers to many different types of water conditions. Flat water, to big waves, to Maliko down wind coast runs, require all muscles to fire and this type of training also known as “propreocetion” work is key. You want your body to respond quickly and naturally. That’s why this gear makes that difference. Be sure you take your time and train your brain with the new reaction benefits that will challenge you. Safety is paramount and as you progress in your leg, core and even upper body strength, go back to the basics and start from the top.

Progressions should be safe, managable and always proper form. Progressions are as simple as two legs to one, less air in disc(s) or more air. Tempo, speed shift, holding weights below your knees or resting on your shoulder as you might perform squats on top of the Gigante disc while standing on the Rocker Board.

Hunter Joslin, Chip and Georgette at INDO Board, thank you for all that you do to help us trainers help more of our clients and water sport enthusiasts, and putting smiles on thousands of hard training folks, and for providing a most excellent quiver of fun under the sun or studio lights!

Mahalo and in good health,
