Saturday April 30th, 2011, Maui’s beautiful N. Shore attracted 72 paddlers of all ages and levels of experience for our second three mile Ohana OluKai Practice Fun Paddle! With only two weeks away from the Third Annual OluKai Ho’olaule’a, we welcomed SUP paddlers, prone paddlers and Heather our OC1 paddler; joined us from Paia Bay to the lifeguard tower at Kanaha Beach Park, in preparation for the New Ohana Fun Paddle @ 9AM, May 14th, 2011.

This paddle was our second practice paddle since our first April 2nd, 2011 was such a huge success. Click here to see the video. We wanted to share again and encourage families, new paddlers and those who’ve never done a down winder, to come and build their confidence.

Peter Swanzy and Julianna Prater from Paia Youth and Cultural Center had five youth from 13 to 14 years old join in the practice paddle. The youth have been training with Pete and Julianna over the last month and their training paid off as this was the first time that these youth had paddled this 3 mile distance. A huge sense of accomplishment and pride way to go! We also had paddlers from Sweden, Nevada and England participate.

For some, this was the first or second time ever experiencing a coast run. After everyone signed in, had a little morning coffee and juice, we all gathered as Matthew Murasko, OluKai Hawaii Ambassador, announced our 3 mile course.

Then the ice chest was turned over to me, and I stood up and asked everyone to join me in some warm up exercises and jumping jacks to shake off any pre-paddle jitters or butterflies!

The conditions were perfect and inviting. The trades were light at about 10 knots that provided for some fun glides.

The first group of paddlers arrived to Kanaha in 30 minutes and the last group arrived in 60 minutes. Upon completion paddlers were treated to water, juice, granola bars and Whoopie Pies, a chocolate cake-vanilla ice cream confection handmade by my boyfriend Tommy Callan.

Mahalo to the Maui lifeguards ( Tony Colletta ) from Baldwin Tower and Kanaha Tower for PWC saftey…and special mahalo also to Milton Martinson of Haiku for PWC water safety as well as SUP water safety guards, Chris Pagdilao, John Smalley, Joshua Kjorven, Randy Royse. Also lending a hand and expertise, Deb Driscoll and Blair Thorndike.

We’d also like to thank the crews at the Naish Maui Pro Center and Second Wind for providing a few extra boards for the kids from the youth center.

I know this paddle provided many an amazing, life-changing ocean experience. I was touched to see everyone supporting one another out there and on the beach. For others it was a chance to encourage their loved ones and friends to go to the next level. Well done.[[Show as slideshow]]

Keep up that that training! The real OluKai Ohana Fun Paddle is May 14 at 9am, same place, same course.
Maui offers consistent trades, warm water, waves and much more. There are many greats that have retired here and new talent charging, like Sam Bittner and Kai Lenny. And then there’s Robby Naish, Matt and Kevin Pritchard, Phil McGain, Mark Johnstone and many others are still throwing forwards, setting the clew on the deck and keeping the sport alive and thriving. Here’s the latest events to mark your calendar, world-wide. Check out the line up on http://americanwindsurfingtour.com/

The same people who presented the hugely successful 2010 Pistol River Wave Bash, will be a driving force behind the first annual American Windsurfing Tour.

• The premier event of the 2011 season is to be held at the famed beach at Waddell Creek, just south of San Francisco. It’s been scheduled for the first weekend in May to take advantage of the prime spring sailing season in Central Cal.

• The infamous Pistol River Wave Bash becomes the second stop, held once again over the third weekend of June during that magical time in Southern Oregon when the spring swells are still hitting and the more consistent summer winds are kicking in.

• Next it’s off to Punta San Carlos, on Mexico’s Baja peninsula, for some world-class down the line wave sailing. To be held over the last weekend of July into the first week of August, in the hopes of coinciding with a tasty south swell from the other hemisphere.

Maui’s own, Sam Bittner is going big for her sport. Support her and windsurfing! Go to: http://americanwindsurfingtour.com/ to follow the tour!

Rig big and hang on for some great sailing action this summer.

We anchored the boat and paddled to the break that was peeling left all day long. Consistent, nice A shaped, and wow, talk about long rides!?!? Crazy! With only 4 of us on the break, you could easily get in 20+ rides or more if you could handle it. Gregg and Sean were showing me the way pointing out the best sweet spot and where the sand bar began.

Sloan charging!
These are very helpful tips when arriving to a new spot. Second time SUP rookie, Sloan, a fisherman from New York was handling his board really well. Gregg was just a paddling machine and we had a hard time pulling him off the waves when it was time to go.

One of many gorgeous sunsets!

I’m fortunate to live in a paradise called Maui, however after recently returning from a new found paradise in Southern Costa Rica, I can now appreciate my new discovery of one of the most beautiful, friendly, places on earth. Warm water, waves and beautiful accommodations is what I discovered. (see all photos below in slide shows )

I was kindly invited by Gregg Mufson, the owner of the Zancudo Lodge; to experience what I can easily say was a first class, four star adventure. Our mission was to scout out the waters, meet the gracious staff and survey the grounds for my SUP stand up paddling clinic he is hosting this April 2011.

On New Year’s day, my arrival to the city of San Jose, Costa Rica I encountered a very smooth transfer from the helpful driver at the airport to the exquisite Intercontinental Hotelwith a comfortable suite. The next morning, after a delicious breakfast buffet, the same driver appeared on time in the lobby ready to take me to local airport where again they welcomed me by first name. Off I went on the modern SANSA plane to Golfito where I would then be greeted by another driver to the boat, which would take me on an exciting ride to the lodge.

Plane ride to town of Golfito

The short plane ride down to the lodge was amazing. Below you could see the gorgeous Dulce coast and the dense jungles with many farms that were scattered throughout.
The plane touched down easily on a small strip and the airport itself had so much character and flavor with, once again my driver looking for me before I could grab my bags!

The colorful town of Golfito reminded me of mine, Paia in Maui. Although we only have one stop light, they have none. The population is roughly 450 people with quaint shops and restaurants and smiles everywhere. My driver spoke very good English so that was helpful to me, since my espanol could have used some practice.

Like clockwork, as I was comfortably waiting at the marina, along came one of the 15 boats from the Zancudo Lodge. The captain welcomed me, grabbed my bags and off we went down the waterways to the lodge. The air was warm and the jungles we passed very thick and I wondered what or who lived in them. On occasion I’d see a gorgeous private bungalow too.

Gregg himself was at the dock and helped me to land. All of his boats were lined up to serve and accommodate us for our private SUP adventures. I was very impressed! My bags were taken for me and I was escorted to the main hall and delighted with a fabulous lunch. The staff made me feel right at home.

My 600 square foot private bungalow was fabulous. I opened the door and thought I had entered the Four Seasons or a modern W hotel. Gregg’s wife, Goldine Wang has impeccable taste and appointed the room just perfectly. This stand alone suite I was in, also called the Junior Suite was gorgeous. It had rare purpleheart hard wood floors, open ceilings with bright light, air conditioning, a very comfortable king size bed, complementary WIFI, flat screen TV, safe deposit box, beautiful bamboo linens and of course a cozy robe and personal slippers. It also had a private sitting terrace. (more photos below)

In the main part of the lodge, the other 12 rooms were appointed in a similar fashion,350 square feet, but had 2 plush, full beds and are just steps away from the main dining hall and bar, adjacent to the inviting pool with teak, comfortable, padded chase lounges.

One can also reserve the impressive Master Suite which is beach front, 1200 square feet, inlcudes a home theatre, separate bedroom and large living space with an outdoor lanai perfect to enjoy the sunsets.

Although I had a bit of jet lag, Gregg was very eager to get us on the water and paddling! I needed the rest of the day to adjust and enjoyed walking on the beach right in front of the lodge that seemed to extend for miles. The water is warm and it’s great for shell hunting.

The weekend I arrived, New Years, is a busy holiday for the local Ticos. The beach was lively and full of warm and friendly waves and smiles. Gregg said that

One can walk for miles on the beach in front of the lodge

tomorrow, it would be dead and very quiet. He was right. The beaches were empty and it was great to stroll as the only one on the beach.

My dinner the first night was outstanding. As a treat, Gregg had a visiting chef named Stephan who prepared us a special shrimp appetizer skewered on sugar cane with a light, tasty lime drizzle. Wow! To follow, a lovely plate of fresh vegetables harvested from the property, fresh dorado caught that day and a side salad.

Finally, the next day our first SUP exploration out in the Bay. Gregg is a stickler for being on time and ready to go, and I appreciate that. Boards, paddles and cooler were loaded already on the boat and at 7am we left the harbor! On the boat, an impressive, powerful 32 footer, Wilson, the first mate and captain Tito were so friendly and really knew these waters. The ride was exiting and sure enough, as planned a nice mellow swell just south of the lodge. We have a code not to share the name of breaks for fear it will be over populated. Trust me, it was awesome. You’ll just have to go and ride it for yourself.

Sean

Although it was only 9 AM, it felt like 1 or 3pm, for we are much closer to the equator. I was sure to lather up some heavy duty sunscreen. If you needed, you could paddle back to the boat, grab a drink and head back out. What service!

Still recovering from a bit of jet lag, I rode all the waves I need to be absolutely convinced that I did not want to leave this place and explore more waves and other water adventures. Di and Yvonne were also charging. At times when I looked over at them, I thought to myself, “wow here comes a decent set and there they were, still paddling and smiling big.” They were stoked!

Back to the lodge, cooling down after an excellent session with new friends, lunch was already being prepared. The menu is fabulous for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have to say, although as a trainer, their French fries and special BLT sandwiches were delicious. Topped off with a nice cool drink, I was ready for a siesta in one of the hammocks that are perfectly strung under to gorgeous palms with views to die for.

Time seems to stand still there and although this was a semi-working trip I felt pretty relaxed. Often, before dinner, some would grab a volleyball game. Just before dinner is served is when the paddlers and the other guests tend to gather in the main lodge hall. We were treated fresh lime ceviche and I have to admit a nice cold Imperial or my favorite, Corona beer went well!

All the people I met staying at the lodge were friendly and eager to be social. I met nice folks from all over escaping the cold East coast storms. I, of course encouraged everyone to try stand up paddling. Some raised an eyebrow very curious and others actually signed up with the instructor the next day.

When the rest of my crew, Yvonne and Di of Laster Heathman Media arrived we planned a fitness afternoon with Gregg and the other guest for and INDO Board demo day. Luckily Marvin Ortiz, professional photographer was on hand to capture some of the laughter and everyone hanging ten on this new training gear that all the trainers will use for the SUP clinics scheduled in April. Yvonee, Di, Gregg, Sloan and Elie were rock stars!

Here’s a link to all the fun on that day: http://www.standuppaddlingfitness.com/2011/01/indo-board-demo-day-zancudo-lodge-costa-rica-with-suzie-cooney-of-suzie-trains-maui/

monkeys spotted in the jungle!

I think one of the most memorable days was paddling to the wild animal sanctuary and along the way I, DI and Yvonne I think were spotted first by these darling red Spider monkeys, curiously swinging from tree top to tree top. I thought to myself, “WOW” this alone was worth the 16 hour plane ride. The waters along the jungle were a beautiful turquoise blue and green. I could see lots of sea life below, including star fish and other brightly colored fish.

We left the boards with the captain, and hopped off the boat and soon began a guided tour through the jungle. Marvin was our chaperone. We were told not to wear watches, earrings or especially sunglasses, for the monkeys are quick and will steal them off you in a moment and head up a tree. Most glasses we were told do not survive.

This particular wild nature preserve also rescues injured birds and other creatures of the jungle. We learned a great deal about toucans and other exotic animals. The tour itself lasts about 2 hours, but we had to rush back to the lodge for a live radio show broadcast to SUP radio to tell the world about this magical place to stand up paddle.

We had had a full day. Nearing the end our fun filled week, tonight before dinner, Gregg offered to be my partner and teach me the game of bocce ball. He is quite the competitor and has a unique style all his own. Di as well, you could tell she was a very experienced player and a little competitive too!

This professional grade bocce ball court is very special. Gregg spared no expense when he personally had over 1500 pounds of crushed oyster shellsimported all the way from Bellingham, Washington. He’s pretty serious and so were some of his other guests. I had a blast and learn quickly about back spin and bumping other balls. This was a great way to catch the most gorgeous sunsets of the day and work up an appetite before dinner. The warm tropical breezes were always present, and now and then a quick squall of rain would sneak through.

I miss my compadres, Di and Yvonne, I was very sad to pack my bags and leave this special place. I thought Maui was the best for stand up paddling, well I’ve been proven wrong. What the Zancudo Lodge is offering to all levels of stand up paddlers, is an exceptional property and warm waters for everyone. Gregg’s qualified staff can help. He can arrange private rides to best breaks, or you can simply carry your board right from the lodge to the ocean. You are literally steps away. Should the wind pick up in the afternoon, the boat can take you out to see as far as you like for what are called down winders. I recommend this for the experienced ocean folks and experienced paddlers. I’m sure Gregg will want to join you!

Gregg and Goldine, thank you for an experience of a life time and I will be back in April. Your hospitality and ability to make everyone feel so welcome is evident as to why you are such a success. I am telling everyone I know to not only come this spring for the SUP clinics, but really make an effort to see what this lodge has to offer. Simply magnifico!

INDO Board Demo Day at the Zancudo Lodge Costa Rica with Suzie Cooney of Suzie Trains Maui

January 5, 2011 – Reporting from the most beautiful SUP and surf and fishing spot in Southern Costa Rica, The Zancudo Lodge! Owner, Gregg Mufson is hanging ten on the INDO Board as he and the crew prepare for the surf rolling in this week. I’m here introducing the team on how The INDO Board is great workout for everyone.

We have all the gear from INDO Board, including the new Gigante disc to challenge beginners to the hard core SUP’rs and surfer alike. Gregg, Yvonne, Sloan, Elle, and Di all participated in an afternoon of learning, laughs and some thigh-burning fun. I can tell their addicted and promised them, after this workout we’ll all be ready for any water action tomorrow!

We started the morning on a mellow, slower surface. Next we graduate to the beach to hard pack sand for some faster action and more fun. In such a short time, everyone got their groove on and was hang’n on the nose. I challenged them to an upper body challenge which Gregg, Di and Yvonne immediately worked up a small sweat with the plank and one leg lifted behind them, alternating at 5 – 10 second intervals. Below, Gregg is performing the advanced plank with one or both feet behind him, on a Gigante disc.

The Gigante disc is the newest platform training tool for INDO Board, that inflates up to 12 inches that achieves the 4-way action intended for those who want to enhance their SUP or surf performance. We placed both discs under Gregg’s surf board and what a ride. Inflate it more and hang on!

It’s my favorite piece of equipment in my studio at home. I also use it for clients just recovering from major hip or knee surgery as a rehab element. Today we’ve kept the inflation to 6 inches as my willing participants start their training.

Then off to what I call the core bug. This move is in the prone position requiring glutes and the upper scapular region of the shoulder blades to work in unison as we seek the most stable position. I recommend keeping the head in a neutral position. I also suggest to keep breathing smoothly and hold the position for 15 – 30 seconds. Rest, then repeat 5 times.

In addition to this great core exercise, by placing the INDO Board board directly on top the Gigante, together we performed leg burning same side lunges, for a count of 5-10 each leg.

Gigante sitting came last where Yvonne, Di and Elle gracefully sat on top of the Gigante as feet and hands stayed off the ground lending to an extreme, deep core constant, contraction! Well done girls.

You can tell we’re having too much fun. I can’t wait for this spring when I host my STAND UP For Women’s Health and Fitness in April, here at the lovely Zancudo Lodge! All the gear is here and so is the fun. For more information go to: http:www.suzietrainsmaui.com/events.

This lodge is like staying at the Four Seasons. From warm waves to a cozy robe in your room, excellent food and gracioius staff, to healthy, to amazing food prepared fresh everyday.

Thank you Chip and Hunter at INDO Board, for sending these boards and discs over. Gregg and the others are on their way to be SUP stars.

( photos below in slideshow )

I had the pleasure of meeting so many dynamic, inspiring women today; all with the desire to learn or improve their skills in stand up paddling. There is something very cool about gathering a group of women together and sharing and adventure that is new and exciting. They all showed up right on time and at 6:45 on the dot, boards were off the cars and lined up on the beach.

After introductions, it was right into some active stretching with our paddles to prepare for the morning ahead. I promised no heavy push ups or sit ups, this time.. ! There was a small south swell running, and safety was on top of the agenda. I reviewed board safety, board features, paddle features and water safety. With experienced Maui waterwoman, Deb Driscoll, big wave SUP surfer, assiting me, we lined everyone up, and one by one, out we went, some for the first time ever experiencing what it’s like to paddle over a wave! All made it just fine past the break and then they got the thumbs up to STAND UP and go.. To help capture the day was Maui’s professional waterwoman and photographer, Julia Schweiger. Check out her website: http://www.jdphotofairy.com/

I have never had such a group that were such fast learners. It was so rewarding to see Susanna conquer her fears and before you know it, she was up and hoot’n and yelling and we were all clapping and whistling! Susanna, you are a shining star! She said that she was so thankful for Deb helping her and staying with her. All of the gals really did great. The winds never really came up too hard which allowed us to stay out longer.

Elizabeth charged! Mary I think you could have gone to Lahaina. It was the first time I was able to take a new crew on a little long distance challenge. Laurel and Mary and Gill leading the way. Julia Schweiger, our photographer and SUP racer herself; had to paddle hard with me catching them at the turn! What a workout. To really test them, we did some push ups, core planks and leg squat. Great job everyone!

As we came in, a few of them caught their first waves! Doesn’t matter if you’re on your knees, standing or sitting down.. you guys caught some rides. Now you know what it feels like!

We wrapped up the day with high fives and now with our new water friends, it was time to refuel and review what we learned. As their reward, my sponsors and supporters helped me fill a nice goody bag to add to the SUP experience. To be a proficient SUP paddler, you must have the right gear!

I’d like to thank those sponsors, Naish International and the Maui Naish Pro Center, Olukai Premium Footwear, ATHLETA,

Here’s what some of the women had to say about the day:

Aloha Suzie:
Where do I begin….How can I express my sincere feelings of gratefulness to you. I cannot tell you how happy I was to be in your presence. Your energy was so moving, your sincerity was inspirational, and your beauty (inside and out) was amazing. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge and your love of the sport, (SUP) with women here on Maui and around the world. Thank you for empowering us with the tools we need to be strong, be fit, and be beautiful, healthy, women of the world. I totally appreciated your professionalism, your sweetness, and your true commitment to the sport. Thank you for enforcing safety both in the water and safety pertaining to our boards. Very necessary and important to always be aware that safety comes first. And most of all, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for allowing me to participate in this past Saturdays’ clinic. I am so blessed to know such an amazing, compassionate, and beautiful woman. God’s blessings to you as you continue to empower women!!! Go for it Suzie!!!!! My Aloha Always, Sandy

Our love and aloha to Deb Driscoll for her love and encouragement as well. She was absolutely fabulous to all the women.

///

Dear Suzie,

Thank you so much for the clinic yesterday morning. For me the group and your leadership as well as Debs’ created an atmosphere that enabled me to push myself beyond my fears and see my strength emerge. The paddling was more fun than I can remember having in a long time and planted a seed to further my own growth as I look forward, stand up straight and paddle in the V shape as though I was flying free amongst a flock of birds on the wing.

///

Dear Suzie,
What a lovely morning we had yesterday, with your SUP Women’s Clinic. You established such a friendly and relaxed tone, so “first timers” like me felt reassured and emboldened to simply “get up and paddle!” I was sure I’d be wobbling and falling but you connected with each one of us, and with your gentle enthusiasm you imbued us all with confidence. In no time at all we were paddling over coral-heads and out to a boat that was moored in the bay.
By starting early, we enjoyed calm conditions and fresh morning air ~ and our convivial group of ladies sure made for a very pleasant experience! It was very satisfying to learn a new skill, and be able to view our beautiful beaches from a whole new perspective.
Thank you so much for your sincere enthusiasm, the generous ‘goodie bags’ and for being such a kind and helpful instructor. I look forward to getting more info on your Makena Paddling excursion, when we’ll hopefully have a group reunion and discover another beautiful stretch of coastline…

Aloha and sincere thanks

OMG, what a blast! What an amazing group of women. I had a great morning with you, all. Thank you, Suzie and Deb, for this wonderful clinic. I can’t believe how much I learned today. I’ll be at Puamana with my family tomorrow morning. Can’t wait to practice the quick turn and teach that to my family! Gabi, Laurel and Susanna are meeting me there, too. Hope rest of you can join us. Puamana is the last beach park before Lahaina.
I’m planing to join the full moon paddling.
Also, Gabi, Laurel, Gill and I like to do a longer distance puddling at Makena soon. I’ll let all of you know when so you can join us, too.
Happy puddling. ?(^o^)?
Thank you, Suzie, for the goodie bag, too.

///

Thanks so much for the fun morning of SUP. I learned some great tips. My 16 year old son wants to come with me for the full moon paddle and bring a friend. Is that OK? They are experienced. What a great sport when a teenager will participate with his mom.

Thanks for putting together such a nice gift bag.

///

Dear Suzie,

Yes, I agree with all that has been written about the fantastic clinic that you ran yesterday. It was exactly what I imagined and hoped it would be–an invigorating and fun morning learning a new skill on the beautiful oceans of our paradise. I thank you kindly for you patient and thorough approach. Between you and Deb I felt very protected. I think I might have the bug now…I went again today with Sachi! It was thrilling to be out on the water today with my husband and my youngest son (they are wave surfers). Can’t wait until my oldest son comes home from college so I can be out there with him too. You’ve opened up new and incredible opportunities to me.

With a heart-felt thanks,

///

Thank you so much, for everything, Suzie! Bringing this group of women together made a perfect opportunity for me to get myself out there and try something new. All of the women were fantastic and so, so sweet. It’s always great to learn something in an atmosphere of such support — being the youngest one there, it was almost like I had a network of mothers to help me through it. Even after claiming the trophy of falling first in the water, the little, encouraging tips you offered me got me in line right away! I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this clinic, and I know that anyone who wants to try SUP can do it, and they’ll love it! You are such an inspirational person, Suzie. Thank you so much for doing all you do to show us what we are capable of!

Mary

///

Hi Suzie, I can’t thank you enough for today. I have been so frustrated trying SUP without even knowing how to stand, hold my paddle or how to get in and out of the surf. You are such a delightful teacher-the stretches, the comraderie, the expertise out on the water, trying to catch those waves. I am absolutely sure that I now have a lifelong passion thanks to you!
Elizabeth

Wow, I’m so grateful to be able to experience a day like today. I will continue my mission and through these lovely women, the sport of SUP will continue to grow and be recognized as not only a great way to get in shape, but to spread to the world that we must take care of ourselves and our health. Might as well have some fun doing it!

FULL MOON SUP PADDLE MAUI, SEPTEMBER 22, 2010

For the brave and adventurous, Maui was the place to be, last night, September 22, 2010. You could see the bottom of the ocean at 8:30 at night. Adorned with glow sticks and glow bracelets, some boards and paddles even decorated and one prone paddler, Shawn, slipped into the warm waters of Maui to stand up paddle under the full moon!

With Noah, Randy Royse,Eddie Ogata, Nitsan, Mark ,Shawn and I leading the pack, looking back behind us and the glow of green lights with the lights of Makawao, Pukalani and Kihei on the hillside as the moon rose behind us. A light breeze on our chests heading out, it was an awesome experience. The tiki torches lit the beach and guided us back as we rounded a catamaran as our marker in the distance. Becky and Steve saw shooting stars, Dagmar and Annette were in awe and kept a brisk pace. Milt was our safety sweeper and made sure everyone was safe and on course. Sarah from Naish had her own eager crew and was mindful to keep the pack together too! Thanks Sarah for all the boards and help and enthusiam.

Joel, Marissa, Sandy, Janet, Lyn, Omi, Richard, Jade, Alfred, Joe, Scott, and so many others enjoyed this adventure and created quite the photo opportunity for Kevin and Bonny. Kevin Frest, a professional photographer who happened to specialize in night photography, saw the torches and the strange glow coming from the beach and grabbed his camera! Tripod set and he started snapping away. Notice the stars in the photo above.

[[Show as slideshow]]

The late summer swell started to show itself and many grabbed a few rides back to the beach. The water was so warm it was hard to get out. I headed to the beach and Laura Dunn, neighbor and friend had brownies ( so healthy ), to share. I grabbed one, then headed back out until about 10:15. There were small bumps and it was so addictive to be out under the moon.

I think I can speak for all of us, that it was truly an awesome time. After we returned to the beach, loaded the boards, it was time for a little guitar and chill’n under the palm trees and with the tikis still lit, a few songs to pass around and share.

Please join us for the next full moon adventure and last before the whales arrive, Friday, October 22, 2010! See Events, at Suzie Trains Maui, or click here for more information.

A big thanks to Coach, Sarah and Nitsan from the Maui Naish Pro Center! Milt for being our guardian, Dagmar and Lauren for feeding us treats, Richard and Sarah for your kind donations, and all that came to share and glide!

Stand up paddling will change your life. Getting fit, making new friends, enjoying a healthy lifestyle couldn’t be more fun!

Aloha and until next time,

Thanks to Suzie I can now call myself a Stand-up Paddler! I had tried many times, to stand up on a board, and always failed. It was so frustrating. I could never get my balance. Taking Suzie's clinic taught me all the little "secrets" and tid-bits that you would not know on your own or a friend won't tell you. I was up standing and paddling immediately and kept it going the whole time! Although I'm sure my form was not it's best, I felt like a pro. I have since gone by myself with no problems at all. I am now purchasing a board and will make it a point to get out there as often as I can. Great exercise, great scenery and great fun! Thank you Suzie! You are a dream!!

August 28, 2010 Maui, Hawaii

Anyone who has had the luxury of visiting or living on Maui, can only describe the beauty of the ocean. Having the opportunity to experience it, play in it, and making it a part of one’s healthy lifestyle, one can only be so fortunate.

Once again, I had the pleasure of meeting some fine women of Maui who joined me in this experience. These women charged on the water and did it with confidence, grace and power.

A Healthy Day of Fun on Maui

Stand up paddling ( SUP ) offers all of that. Today we also had a surprise, a small pod of curious dolphins! Rarely do I see them so close in and it really made for a memorable experience!

Meet Jenn, Peggy, Stacey, Monica, Janet and Amanda. What a cool group of gals. Of course we laughed, splashed and tried a few moves on the board that caused a few grunts ( Stacey….. ). What I also thought was great, is that we traded boards now and then to feel the different types of board that offered new challenges. Some boards were less stable, some more. Their paddling strokes by the end of the hour were very impressive. I had a stubborn droplet of water on my camera, so sorry for the blurry photos!

Peggy

Thank you, thank you, thank you Suzie! Saturday was an amazing day for me. I was definitely apprehensive about my capabilities. I have terrible balance, but I really wanted to learn a sport that would let me enjoy the ocean. Your instruction and encouragement gave me the confidence to try and I had so much fun (even if I did spend more time in the water than everyone else)! I now feel confident in learning the basics and I know that I can easily get back up when I fall. Enjoying the peaceful morning with a great group of women and seeing dolphins made the experience that much more special. I can’t wait until I can go out again! Thank you again, you really are an inspiration! And also thank you for the goody bag and to your wonderful sponsors, Naish, OluKai, and the American Heart Association, who so generously donated to our goody bag.

P.S. I didn’t want to return my rented board without getting a bit more practice. I met my husband and we went to Wailea Beach. I showed him what I had learned and then he too gave it a try. He’s not much of a water person but he shared my enthusiasm and so next time we’ll rent two boards and practice together. My goal is to purchase boards and make this a regular part of our life. And hopefully, inspire my daughters too! Thank you. Peggy, Kula

Thanks to Suzie I can now call myself a Stand-up Paddler! I had tried many times, to stand up on a board, and always failed. It was so frustrating. I could never get my balance. Taking Suzie’s clinic taught me all the little “secrets” and tid-bits that you would not know on your own or a friend won’t tell you. I was up standing and paddling immediately and kept it going the whole time! Although I’m sure my form was not it’s best, I felt like a pro. I have since gone by myself with no problems at all. I am now purchasing a board and will make it a point to get out there as often as I can. Great exercise, great scenery and great fun! Thank you Suzie! You are a dream!! Stacey, Kihei

Wow! Thank you so much for the AMAZING and INSPIRING free women’s SUP clinic you held today. With absolutely perfect weather and your constantly cheerful and encouraging attitude it could not have been any better. We were greeted by lake like conditions and Suzie’s contagious zest for life.

Starting it off with helpful safety tips and a little basic SUP 101 we were off! It’s amazing how much more confidant I was entering the water today after getting some tips from a real pro.Once we were out and up, Suzie paid careful attention to each and every one of us individually as well as collectively; and continued to coach and encourage us all.

By tweaking my stance on the board as well as my grip on the paddle, I instantly felt the difference in how much more control I had. We were graced by rays, turtles and even dolphins today as the 7 of us gained confidence and skills that we can build on for a lifetime of fun and health with SUP. To top it all off, we were greeted by fantastic goodie bags awaiting us on the beach.

Thank you to all of Suzie’s sponsors for supporting us in trying something new and motivating us to keep doing it!

Suzie never fails to brighten my day and get me excited about health, fitness and water sports.

Your uncanny ability to wipe out fears and build self esteem is so rare and so appreciated.

After today’s SUP clinic I am definitely hooked!

Thank you Suzie for all you do for us and our community.

That was the most fun I have had in a long time! What a great group of women, with an amazing person leading us. I was a little nervous at first, but felt so safe with Suzie. I learned all the in’s and out’s of SUP’ing, from getting the board off the car, to carrying it; from entering the water to the right moment to stand up….it was everything I had hoped for, and so much more. I learned about water safety, different ways to paddle, even exercises to do while hanging out on the flat-water ocean! I left the clinic with a sense of confidence and empowerment that just fills my heart with joy. Thank you, Suzie! I felt so confident that I went straight home, got my son, and took him SUP’ing, by myself! And there was another gal from our clinic, out with her family, too. Big smile over here. Best weekend ever. The dolphins were a sure sign that learning SUP is the start of a positive, new adventure for all of us!

Thanks so very much, Suzie. Jenn

Thank you for such an incredible morning on Saturday! The clinic far surpassed any expectations I brought with me. I’ve always wanted to try SUP yet never felt it was a sport I could try on my own. Your clinic gave me the opportunity to learn something new in a supportive environment and I can’t wait to get out on the water again.

I’m now looking forward to all the possibilities the future holds for me and SUP. I hope to find a group of people I can regularly enjoy the sport with and hone my new skill. My sincerest mahalo to you, Suzie, for the opportunity. You made me feel so incredibly comfortable in a situation I slightly feared. Your knowledge, enthusiasm and instruction is amazing! You inspire me.

Organized by Donnie Arnoult, owner of Go Cycling Maui and Maui Cyclery, this event drew out some of the top athletes from Germany, Japan, Colorado and we even had a few of our local heroes. I believe one of the youngest entrants was 11 years old!

Donnie and wife Michelle did a great job of organizing this event and the volunteers at the rest stations were incredible. The after party was a feast, that included music and even a magician to entertain the kids and us big kids!

One competitor from Maui stood out. Former windsurf champion and my neighbor and friend, Alf Imperato. Alf’s impressive time of 3:22 gave him the title of “fastest man on Maui.” Alf’s training regime was quite intense, often seen at our gate at sunrise doing double rides.

I asked Alf if he’ d tell me how he trained, his goals and what drives him. Here’s what he wrote:

“Training for this year’s event was mentally one of the easiest contests that I’ve ever trained for — I didn’t have to do it for sponsors, prove anything to anyone or finish in a certain time for a paycheck. This ride was for me to better my time from last year. With that said, it WAS one of the most physically challenging training schedules I’ve ever had! The ride up the hill is only steep every step of the way, and breathing becomes an issue, especially when you get to altitude.

Over the last few months, I tried to focus on speed and average speeds for every climb throughout the course. Obviously, we all have good days and bad days, but it’s important to see gains and progress through your training (and each day certainly won’t be faster or better than the last). After almost nine (9) months of riding with a heart rate monitor and keeping records of mileage, heart rate, food intake and overall feel — I had a pretty good idea of how not to get hurt or over train. SO, the last two and half months before the ride, I put all that aside and figured the longer I could stay in my “CAVE OF PAIN” the faster I could go up the hill. It only seemed to come down to self-discipline to continue and increase how much you can put yourself through without cracking and giving up. That doesn’t just include pain in your legs, higher heart rates, being tired or pushing a bigger gear. It carries through to eating better, avoiding empty calories, getting more sleep, using time more efficiently, and keeping work where it belongs — at work. Our days are ours’ for us to ENJOY!”

Thanks Alf for sharing. Simply awesome and a definitely words from an athlete!
